(GILBERT & SULLIVAN) SULLIVAN, ARTHUR. Autograph letter signed, 1 1/2 pages, 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", on printed letterhead of 1, Queen's Mansions, Victoria Street, S. Moore, replying affectionately: My sole object in writing the song, was to try and give you a little pleasure -- for you have always been sweet and kind to me. But your gift is so graciously made, that I must perforce keep it. [I]t is for your sake that I hope Keeley [sic] will bring his discovery to a successful issue -- you who have been so staunch & loyal in your belief & support. And somehow, I think he will succeed. With a two inch tear at center-fold (lower edge chipped); remains of prior mounting tape on blank integral leaf and with a small tear from removal; mailing folds starting; lightly toned and soiled; else good.

This letter contains an interesting contemporary reference to the inventions and ambitions of Philadelphia inventor, John Ernst Worrell Keely of the Keely Motor Company and his proposed vapor motive power. Additional images available upon request.
